Our next adventure was a trip into North Carolina for an excursion on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. The particular excursion that we took was the Tuckasegee River Excursion. The train car on which we rode was The Royal Palm car. Here's a photo:
The excursion is described as follows:
"Enjoy a calming ride through the countryside of WNC. Select the Tuckasegee River route and enjoy the quaint historic town of Dillsboro, where you’ll find shops and restaurants to enjoy during your layover. You’ll also pass through the historic Cowee Tunnel, along with passing the famous train wreck site featured in the movie The Fugitive!"
Here are some photos and video from the excursion:
Complimentary admission to the Smoky Mountain Trains Museum was included with the train ticket purchase. The museum is located in the depot and is described as follows:
"Smoky Mountain Trains is more than an ordinary museum. With its collection of 7,000 Lionel™ engines, cars and
accessories, impressive operating layout, children’s activity center, and gift/toy shop, Smoky Mountain Trains has something for everyone."
The layout includes approximately one mile of track and fifty pounds of ballast. These are images of the museum's model exhibit:
