Amistad National Recreation Area

A stop in Del Rio, Texas


After leaving the Big Bend area, we traveled to Del Rio for a 2-day stop. Since my "America the Beautiful" military veteral lifetime national parks pass includes admission to national monuments and federal recreation areas, we went to Amistad National Recreation Area. The second-largest reservoir in Texas, it straddles the border between the United States and Mexico. The NRA includes the area around the Amistad Reservoir at the confluence of the Rio Grande, the Devils River, and the Pecos River and consists of the portion of the reservoir on the US side of the border.


The park is home to the Amistad Reservoir, which is a popular destination for water-based recreation, including boating, fishing, swimming, and scuba diving. The park also offers opportunities for camping, hiking, rock art viewing, and birdwatching.
