From Lafayette, Louisiana we drove to the Escapees RV Club’s Rainbow Plantation in Summerdale, Alabama. Rainbow Plantation is located approximately halfway between Mobile, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida.
Because my wife and I both grew up in Alabama (she in the Anniston area, me in Mobile), this trip was a return to our roots. My summers during my teen years were spent on Mobile Bay’s eastern shore (at Mullet Point). After my wife and I met in Tuscaloosa at the University of Alabama, we were married in a small church on Mobile Bay’s shore in Fairhope, Alabama (Sacred Heart Church) which was only open during the summer months while I was growing up.
The return to this area on this trip brought back many happy memories. We have sent several days driving around the area including Fairhope, Daphne, Foley, and a trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama, where we enjoyed a tasty dinner at The Beach House. If you’re ever in the area, I recommend a meal there.
While the area brought back many memories, it has also experienced many changes. Driving over the many county roads suggested by our GPS, I was constantly surprised by the extent to which the area has been developed. Many extensive fields of corn, potatoes, soybean, pecan trees and melons have given way to subdivisions. I’m not saying that is either good or bad, just extremely different.
