Stone Mountain - day 2

February 1, 2022

A hike and a sight

On day 2 of our Stone Mountain visit, I started with a visit to the Park's Songbird Habitat and Trail. Although there was a distinct lack of songbirds in February, it was nice to get out and stretch my legs. After hiking the trail, I made my way to see the 732-bell carillon (pictured above) which was originally exhibited at the Coca Cola Pavilion in the 1964 World's Fair before being donated to Stone Mountain Park by Coca Cola. The structure is massive - a "13-story instrument of redwood and steel." Located at the end of a peninsula on Lake Stone Mountan, it is played from a keyboard located on the shore. Since we visited the Park in winter, this attraction was not operated. Normally (during "tourist season") there are daily concerts. To hear a recording of the carillon, go here for an article about it that includes a recording. You can also find recordings on the web by searching for videos of "carillon Stone Mountain."
